My God's A Cowboy. Opening Reception December 10th

On the evening of December 10th, 2010, I would like to invited everyone to come to the opening reception of my BFA Thesis Exhibition: My God's A Cowboy. The event will take place in the Stella Elkins Gallery of Tyler School of Art, Temple University.

Artist Statement

My body of work combines the feelings of the sanctity of the church with the formality of the courtroom. The absence of technology combined with an overwhelming sense of spirituality embodies a story within each piece of work.

Upon approaching my work, the stillness of each piece, subtle changes in tonalities and intricate detail is inviting for the viewer to come closer and investigate each piece. Each piece has an overwhelming sense of beauty. Not beauty in the sense of the work appearing pleasing to the eye, but rather beauty that has a high spiritual quality that begins to manifest in its own personality. Upon entering the gallery, the sanctity of church is felt through the lighting, stillness and quietness of the space. This allows the viewer to become acquainted with the personalities of each piece. Eventually each piece ignites its own story within the viewer.

This work is inspired by personal experiences of loss, hope, reverence, sorrow and insanity along with the attempt to find sanity during the most sorrowfully difficult moments of my life. I feel that religion does just that for many people. Religion is a set of beliefs that explains the cause, nature and purpose of the universe, especially during lulls of sadness. I want the viewer to feel a sort of sanctity upon entering my work. I want the work to create a self-reflective dialogue within the audience along with allowing the viewer to be their own quiet judge of the spiritual objects in front of them.
